What a crown does for your tooth

A crown, or "cap," is a custom-made cover that fits completely over a damaged or weakened tooth — restoring its size, strength, shape and appearance. Crowns are commonly used after a root canal, on a heavily filled tooth, or on a tooth that's cracked, worn down, or has had a large portion of structure lost to decay.

We offer three trusted crown materials, so you can choose the right balance of strength, appearance and budget for your specific tooth.

Choosing the right crown

Zirconia Crown

Metal-free, extremely strong and closely matches natural tooth translucency — our most popular premium choice for front and back teeth.

PFM Crown

Porcelain fused to a metal base — a strong, reliable, cost-effective option well suited to molars under heavy chewing load.

Gold Crown

Exceptional durability and gentle on opposing teeth — a long-standing traditional option, ideal for back molars.

When you may need a crown

  • After root canal treatment, to protect the treated tooth
  • A tooth with a large, old or failing filling
  • A cracked or fractured tooth
  • Severely worn-down teeth from grinding
  • To anchor a dental bridge or cover a dental implant

Our process

01

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is gently shaped to make room for the crown.

02

Impression / Scan

A precise mould captures the exact shape needed for your crown.

03

Temporary Crown

A temporary cap protects the tooth while your crown is made.

04

Final Fitting

Your custom crown is checked for fit, bite and shade, then cemented.

Caring for your crown

  • Brush and floss around the crown exactly as you would a natural tooth
  • Avoid biting down on very hard foods like ice or hard candy
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Visit us if a crown ever feels loose or uneven — don't wait

Frequently asked questions

Which crown material is best?

It depends on the tooth's location and your priorities. Zirconia is ideal where appearance matters most; Gold and PFM are excellent for strength on back molars. We'll recommend the best fit during consultation.

How long do dental crowns last?

With good care, a well-fitted crown typically lasts 10–15 years or longer before it may need replacement.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Tooth preparation is done under local anesthesia, so it's painless. Some mild sensitivity with the temporary crown is normal until the final one is fitted.
